Hello my Name is Tatjana Lietz and I’m in the first year of my Master in Global Sports Management at accadis Hochschule. Today I want to tell you about my experience at the EASM Student Seminar and Conference 2019 in Seville.
What is EASM?
The first time I heard about EASM was this year in March. It stands for European Association of Sports Management. During their annual conference they bring academics and professionals from the field of sports management together. Our guest lecturer Gerardo Bielons was the organizer of the conference and invited us to take part.
Clueless and alone in Seville
Although I was the only accadis student to take part, I was looking forward to the student seminar. I had no clue what to expect from the seminar and conference, but found it a good chance for networking and gaining experience. Besides, the price of 600€ for 8 days seminar, conference and full board accommodation seemed very fair.
We were accommodated at the Pablo de Olavide University which is located 15 minutes from the city center of Seville with the metro. I shared the room with Camille, who is a PhD student from Montpellier. My expectations were already over-satisfied when we had the first get together with all students. There were students and lecturers from Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Australia, Japan and various universities taking part in the seminar. It was a very friendly and casual atmosphere with a lot of space to get to know each other.
Soccer rules (the world) --> Spain
Within the student seminar, we had several presentations from professionals and lecturers, but the main part was to prepare a group presentation for one of the four given case studies. Each of the 16 groups wanted to succeed, because the best group of all cases could present their case during the conference and win 1000€. We had three days to sort out our pre-assigned groups, get to know the topic and find a solution for the given problem. Although all case studies were about soccer, I had the lucky situation to be in the case based on women’s soccer. My group was composed of Russian, Australian, Swiss and German students. We prepared a good presentation and the representative from LaLiga was impressed about our ideas, although we only reached second place in our case study group.
Leisure time
The student seminar was not only about working on the case study. We had enough time in-between to get to know each other and see the city of Seville. The seminar included a guided tour in the city, a flamenco show and a visit to the training track of FC Seville. Meals were always provided at the university and in the evenings we went to great Spanish restaurants with the group.
Conference = Networking
With the beginning of the conference, the relaxing time of the trip started for us students. After we finished our presentations on Tuesday, we enjoyed the conference opening ceremony which took part in the garden of the Casino. With good food, drinks and conversations, it was a relaxed feeling as is usually the case in sports. There I also met Professor Dr. Gerhard Trosien, Professor Dr. Florian Pfeffel and Maria Ratz, who had arrived to take part at the conference. Later in the evening, I scored first networking results by meeting a professor from Austria, who is doing research in the field of sport logistics and sustainability. Fortunately, this is also my field of interest.
Next year EASM London – Who wants to join me?
Based on the people I met and the conversations I had, the seminar and conference were more than worth their price. Indeed, for a student it’s a lot of money to afford, but for an international career these events are invaluable. I will definitively take part in the conference and seminar next year in London. Let me know if you want to join me!
Cheers Tatjana
