An interview with accadis international student Emily Lam

Why did you decide to study at accadis Hochschule?

EL: I decided to study at accadis because I was interested in the Digital Business Strategy program and because of its internationality and small class sizes.

What was the biggest challenge before the start of the program?

EL: Trying to find a place to live in Frankfurt was the biggest challenge, because there are a lot of scammers on the apartment rental platforms, and a lot of renters will ignore you if you aren’t already physically in Germany to look at the apartment and to meet the landlord in real life.

Your arrival in Germany – what surprised you?

EL: Nothing really surprised me because I had already been to Germany 4 times before officially moving to Germany for my Master’s program at accadis.

In your opinion, are there any amusing German quirks?

EL: Germans love to open all the windows immediately when they enter a room and they love to drink carbonated water.

What are the biggest differences between a German university and a university in your home country?

EL: I don’t know about other German universities, but accadis is much smaller than the universities in my home country. At accadis, you also have to have a 75% attendance rate for every class in order to pass, whereas at my home country, it is a lot more flexible.

What do you particularly like about your accadis studies?

EL: I like the small class sizes and my friendly classmates.

What do you expect from your studies in Germany?

EL: I expect to meet new people and to gain work experience in Germany.

What tips do you have for prospective students from abroad who would like to study at accadis Hochschule?

EL: It is important to learn how to write essays and make citations according to the academic writing style at accadis.

Is there anything from your home country that you – apart from friends and family – miss in Germany?

EL: I really miss Asian food!

We have learned that you play drums in your spare time. How did this hobby come about?

EL: One of my friends told me she played the drums. I thought it was super cool and a lot more fun than playing the piano or violin, so I begged my mother to let me take drum lessons, and she did!

How often do you practice?

EL: I used to practice a few times a week, but now that I’ve moved to Germany, I don’t have a drum set anymore.

What do you have to bring along for this hobby?

EL: I brought my drumsticks to Germany so I can play if I get access to a drum set.

Dear Emily Lam, thank you very much for this interesting interview.
